Jonathan, I don't think Stephen Harper has ever said a kind word about Elmasry, and certainly Elmasry hates Harper and the Conservatives (look at the marks given to the Conservatives in the CIC report card). The gala in question was about honoring engineers, and was full of politicians.
In hindsight, CIC should have been treated with the contempt it deserves and its event ignored, but there was reason to hope that this event was not pushing a Jihadi agenda. From CIC's website:
The theme for CIC's 2004 Gala was to honour Canada's Muslim engineers for their diverse and innovative contributions to this country....
The reception was also attended by the Hon.Ujjal Dosanjh, Minister of Health; the Hon. Judy Sgro, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration; the Hon. Mauril Belanger, Minister responsible for Official Languages, the Hon. Carolyn Bennet, Minister of State (Public Health); MPs from the four major political parties; senators; Ottawa mayor Bob Chiarelli; Ottawa Deputy Chief of Police Larry Hill; representatives of government agencies, including the RCMP and CSIS; ambassadors of Muslim countries; and CIC board members and delegates.
I thik we can safely conclude that, of all the politicians present, Stephen Harper was the furthest from endorsing or appeasing Elmasry.
Al
