I've said this before, but perhaps it's worth saying again to those on CCD who support hate-speech laws to combat antisemitic opinions both in society and in universities.
If you really believe in a free society, then don't attempt to censor those opinions, but rather censure them, a line have recently taken in http://www.psych.utoronto.ca/users/furedy/Papers/af/LoveFreedomA.doc.
Of course if a university administration appears to be more concerned with Muslim comfort than Jewish comfort, then it is open to criticism on the grounds of consistency as Jonas and I did recently (see http://www.psych.utoronto.ca/users/furedy/Papers/af/UT1108.doc). But leave the velvet totalitarian tool of hate speech laws to those who are not really serious about defending a free society, in contrat to defending a particular ideology.
All the best, John
P.S. This is also the reason why I did not join the 150 UofT colleagues who have tried to fight the Israel Apartheid Week by asking the administration to band on the grounds that it is "hateful".
